PROGRAM NOTES

Music holds a significant place in the lives of people all over the world. It has the power to heal. It has the power to inspire, to motivate, and to unite. It is a phenomenon that not only entertains us, but bridges the gaps of time, geography, language, religion, race, culture, gender, and even politics. It helps us find a common ground where one doesn’t seemingly exist, because music creates relationships, music builds friendships, and music fosters love.

Every day, roughly 90 percent of the world’s population uses music in some way. That means over 7.3 billion people benefit daily from the power of music, and in my experience, there is no greater joy than playing music with friends. Whether it is performing in a stadium for tens of thousands of people or playing in an amateur group with members of your community, music and friendship go hand in hand. One such group of dedicated community musicians that I have the honor of calling my friends is the Beaver County Symphonic Wind Ensemble. Founded in Beaver, Pennsylvania, fifty years ago, this group of over 70 student, amateur, and professional musicians come together to create rewarding musical experiences for the group and the community.

Fanfare for Friends is a jubilant celebration of friendship and camaraderie provided by regional community, educational, and professional bands around the world. Through bold and triumphant brass figures, excitement and anticipation unfold as the music seamlessly weaves intricate melodic lines interjected with the opening fanfare and soaring woodwind accents. Fanfare for Friends weaves for audiences a rich tapestry of sound that reflects the diversity and uniqueness of each individual in the group.

Fanfare for Friends is not merely a composition, it is an ode to the warmth and support that genuine friendships bring to our lives. Through its spirited melodies and jubilant atmosphere, this piece invites listeners to join in the celebration of the meaningful connections that enrich our journey through life.

Todd Goodman’s Fanfare for Friends was written for Kevin Newton, Bobby Jarsulic, and the Beaver County Symphonic Wind Ensemble in celebration of their 50th anniversary.
